  1. RATTLING ALONG

  3. Rattling along the old road
  4. from planet to planet,
  5. watching the starscapes
  6. bumping past the windows;
  7. patching up the radar
  8. for the tenth time,
  9. I find myself brooding
  10. on the older times, on the memories
  11. with the fur worn away from their edges.
  12.  
  13. Recalling the skinscapes
  14. of breast and thigh;
  15. considering the ways
  16. of a number of women;
  17. pondering the causes
  18. of my seven bankruptcies ...
  19. Why did the Magellan Line,
  20. my greatest triumph, my vindication,
  21. overnight crumble to a dust, a nothing?
  22.  
  23. Remember lying in bed
  24. a century back,
  25. with an open window,
  26. an ornate balcony
  27. and distant mountains
  28. lit by a full moon.
  29. A night-bird shrieking
  30. had woken us both, we turned together
  31. in the warm air, relaxing: a good time.
  32.  
  33. Buying my first ship,
  34. a millennium ago now:
  35. do I remember that,
  36. or has it all changed in my mind ?
  37. Can I turn this one wreck
  38. into yet another fleet,
  39. or have I discovered nothing
  40. from all that money, all that beauty,
  41. those ships that have passed through my hands ?
  42.  
  43. At least, this run will be profitable;
  44. at least Alice (or is it Rose?)
  45. is waiting for me ...
